A spokesperson for Sinclair confirmed the change: “Starting Tuesday evening, our ABC affiliates will preempt ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ and replace it with our own news programming. We’re still in discussions with ABC about whether the show will return to its regular slot.” In broadcast terms, “preempting” means Sinclair will temporarily block ABC’s feed—normally reserved for the Kimmel show—and run local or syndicated news instead.
Meanwhile, Disney and ABC have already weighed in on Kimmel’s fate. In a statement released Monday, Disney explained that last Wednesday they paused production of the program “to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. Some comments were poorly timed and felt insensitive. Since then, we’ve had thoughtful conversations with Jimmy and decided to relaunch the show on Tuesday night.”
Why did Disney pull the plug in the first place? It followed a pledge from two of America’s biggest station owners—Sinclair and Nexstar Media Group—to refuse to air Kimmel’s program after the host made on-air remarks about the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. That move gained extra weight after FCC Chair Brendan Carr suggested broadcasters should consider penalties for hosts whose commentary he found objectionable.
Here’s the part most people miss: the entertainment world didn’t stay silent. Over 400 performers and creatives, including heavyweights like Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks and Martin Short, signed an open letter protesting Disney’s decision to bench Kimmel. They saw the suspension as a threat to free expression rather than fair editorial judgment.
Kimmel’s comeback was signed off by Disney CEO Bob Iger and co-chair Dana Walden, but the fine print remains hazy. Will Jimmy need to issue an apology for his Charlie Kirk comments? Disney isn’t saying—at least, not yet.
