Disney's Tron: Ares Stumbles at the Box Office, While Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Continues to Shine
Disney's Tron: Ares, the latest installment in the 43-year-old cyber saga, failed to impress at the box office, falling short of pre-weekend projections with a worldwide debut of $60.5 million, including $27 million from international markets. Despite a strong promotional tour, the film directed by Joachim Rønning and starring Jared Leto didn't live up to expectations.
However, there were some positive signs. Tron: Ares performed exceptionally well in Latin America, securing number-one positions across the region. Brazil and Mexico outperformed the franchise's previous film, Tron: Legacy, and Alien: Romulus. Other notable successes were recorded in Spain, the UK, Australia, and Hong Kong. Local titles dominated in Germany and Korea.
The movie's PLF uptake was strong, and it has secured an additional two weeks in IMAX theaters with no competitive releases for a few weeks. Tron: Ares also boasts a talented soundtrack featuring songs from Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode.
China is set to release the film on October 17. Meanwhile, the top five box office earners this weekend were Mexico ($2.9M), the UK ($2.4M), France ($1.9M), Australia ($1.5M), and Germany ($1.4M).
Warner Bros' One Battle After Another, on the other hand, demonstrated remarkable staying power, dropping only 32% for $15.7 million in 77 markets. Notable increases were seen in Argentina (+20%), Korea (+6%), Colombia (-23%), Poland (-24%), Sweden (-24%), France (-26%), Holland (-26%), Spain (-27%), and Norway (-29%). The film has accumulated an offshore total of $83.5 million and a global total of $138 million through Sunday, with China set for its release on October 17.
Universal/DreamWorks Animation's Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie expanded its reach by adding 11 markets, earning another $7.2 million for a total offshore cume of $19.5 million and a global total of $46 million.
New Line/Warner Bros' The Conjuring: Last Rites achieved a new offshore milestone, crossing the three-century mark. The film generated $5.8 million from 75 overseas markets, bringing its international total to $300.6 million. The global total now stands at $473 million.
Japan is the last market to release The Conjuring: Last Rites on October 17.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle has become the fifth highest-grossing film of the year worldwide, amassing $648 million. In North America, it surpassed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to become the top-grossing international film of all time in the domestic marketplace, with a cumulative total of $128.6 million. Crunchyroll/Sony markets contributed $3.5 million from 62 markets, resulting in a studio cume of $336 million internationally.
These box office updates offer a glimpse into the diverse landscape of global cinema, showcasing the varying fortunes of different films across various markets.
