Ruth Odinga's Stance on Coalition Politics is Not What You Think!
Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga has come forth to clarify a misunderstanding surrounding her position on the potential coalition strategies of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as we approach the 2027 General Election. Recent reports have suggested that Odinga is against ODM forming coalitions, but she asserts that these claims are misrepresentations of her true sentiments.
In a recent engagement led by Ndhiwa MP Martin Owino at the family homestead of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Ruth Odinga highlighted that her focus is unwaveringly on maintaining unity within ODM. "I have no objections to ODM collaborating with other political entities, but it's crucial to ensure that our party remains robust and unified," she remarked during her address.
She underscored that her concerns primarily revolve around fostering a cohesive internal structure, which she believes is pivotal for the party's success. Drawing from history, she recalled the turbulent 2007 elections where ODM, despite facing obstacles that thwarted their presidential ambitions, managed to leverage its significant voter base to secure influential roles in Parliament, including that of the Speaker.
Odinga made a compelling analogy, stating, "You can’t engage in battle without a formidable weapon; the strength of that weapon determines your effectiveness in the fight." She emphasized that shoring up ODM's strength is her top priority moving forward.
In the wake of various media reports claiming that she was firmly against coalitions and even suggested that ODM might choose to run independently in 2027, Odinga firmly dismissed these narratives as misleading. She further clarified that she has not indicated any intention for ODM to align with President William Ruto in forthcoming elections, stating, "That proposal is not under consideration. Our primary objective is to reinforce our base and revitalize our grassroots organization."
Currently, ODM is part of a larger cooperative framework with Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA), stemming from a memorandum of understanding established last March. However, party leaders have been clear that this arrangement should not be seen as a coalition agreement. ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna recently reiterated this, highlighting that the party is committed to participating in forthcoming mini-elections independently, without any binding coalition agreements with UDA.
"The agreement we made with UDA does not equate to a coalition pact. A broad-based arrangement is not a political party and therefore lacks joint candidates," Sifuna explained. Ruth Odinga echoed this perspective, affirming that ODM will continue to support the broad-based government until 2027, after which the party will determine its future direction.
"We are not entering into any new agreements; our focus is solely on strengthening ODM," she concluded, setting the stage for a potentially pivotal period in the party's trajectory.
