This controversy stems from comments made by former bantamweight king, Petr Yan, who questioned Chimaev's Russian heritage despite his recent success as a Russian fighter.
Chimaev, in a recent interview, expressed his disappointment and surprise at Yan's public remarks. He revealed that he and Yan have a personal connection, having trained together in the past. Chimaev emphasized his pride in being Russian, even though he now fights under the United Arab Emirates (UAE) flag after obtaining citizenship earlier this year.
"I know Petr Yan personally, and he knows me too. We've shared a training space, and yet he says he doesn't consider me a Russian fighter. It's quite ironic, given that we communicate in Russian," Chimaev shared with Aslanbek Badaev.
Chimaev went on to highlight his contributions to Russia, including building gyms and roads, and supporting the youth. He contrasted this with his lack of involvement in the UAE, stating, "I haven't built a gym there for anyone, nor do I help anyone there. It's a different dynamic; they help me, and I help my people back home."
In a playful jab, Chimaev even brought up Yan's surname, suggesting, "How can a Chinese-sounding last name claim that a Chechen guy is not Russian?"
Chimaev's response to Yan's comments has sparked a wider discussion about national identity and the complexities that come with it, especially in the context of sports and international competition.
However, it seems unlikely that Yan will engage in this debate further, as he is currently focused on his upcoming title defense at UFC 323 against bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili. This highly anticipated rematch will take place on December 6, with the co-main event featuring a flyweight title clash between Alexandre Pantoja and Joshua Van.
