Saad Rafique Warns of Democracy's Peril as Judges Resign
In a recent statement, PML-N senior leader and former federal minister Khawaja Saad Rafique expressed deep concern over the recent wave of judicial resignations, calling it a critical moment for the country's democratic institutions. He emphasized the importance of the rule of law and the Constitution, highlighting the resignations of Justice Athar Minallah, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, and now Justice Shams Mehmood Mirza as a grave warning for Pakistan's democracy.
Rafique praised the integrity of Justice Athar Minallah, a prominent figure in the Lawyers' Movement for the restoration of judges, and Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, who served as Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court with competence and integrity. He also noted the reputation of Justice Shams Mehmood Mirza for fairness.
Despite acknowledging disagreements with some judicial decisions, Rafique expressed his belief in the judges' capability and impartiality. He criticized attempts to link Justice Mirza's resignation to his relationship with lawyer Salman Akram Raja, emphasizing that such associations should not influence judicial work.
Rafique stressed the need to differentiate between past and recent resignations, as the circumstances differ. He expressed sadness over the latest resignations, viewing them as a serious concern for anyone committed to constitutional supremacy and democracy. He warned that this trend could extend beyond the judiciary, potentially impacting Parliament and the stability of the state.
Instead of celebrating the resignations, Rafique urged the government and political forces to address the underlying issues. He emphasized the importance of maintaining stability, especially in a nuclear-armed country like Pakistan, surrounded by adversaries, where internal turmoil cannot be afforded.
