Macro Strategist Warns of Crypto Market 'Death Spiral' After Bitcoin's Recent Surge
In a recent interview with Bloomberg, macro strategist Mark Cudmore offered a cautionary perspective on the cryptocurrency market's recent surge and its potential impact on stock markets.
Cudmore expressed concern over the holdings of digital assets by companies, particularly those with significant Bitcoin reserves. He emphasized that the crypto market's 'pain' is not yet over, citing the example of MicroStrategy, which has a reserve fund to cover 14 months of dividend payments. Despite this, Cudmore remains wary of the overall market dynamics.
The analyst highlighted the 'multiplier' effect of digital asset-focused companies and their ETFs, which can amplify market movements. He warned that if share prices fall below the value of crypto assets, these companies might be forced to sell, triggering a 'negative death spiral'.
Cudmore also mentioned the possibility of a 'hawkish interest rate cut' by the Fed next week, which, combined with the cryptocurrency sector's decline, could hinder the expected year-end rally. He stressed that this information is not investment advice.
