Apple's First Low-Cost Laptop: Unlocking Budget-Friendly Macs (2025)

Get ready for a game-changer in the tech world! Apple, the tech giant known for its premium devices, is about to shake things up with a bold move into the low-cost laptop market.

Apple's Secret Weapon: A Budget Mac to Challenge Chromebooks and Windows PCs

In a surprising strategic shift, Apple is developing a budget-friendly Mac aimed at students, businesses, and casual users. This new device is designed to cater to those who primarily browse the web, work on documents, or do light media editing. But here's where it gets interesting: Apple is also targeting potential iPad buyers who might prefer the traditional laptop experience.

Code-named J700, this machine is currently undergoing active testing at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California, and is already in early production with overseas suppliers. The plan is to launch it in the first half of next year, a move that could revolutionize the market.

Apple's spokesperson has declined to comment, but the implications are clear. This marks a significant departure from Apple's historical focus on premium devices with high profit margins. The company has vowed not to chase market share with lower-end offerings, but the growing threat of Chromebooks and the potential opportunity to entice Windows customers seem to be driving this decision.

And this is the part most people miss: Apple's new laptop will be priced well under $1000 by using less advanced components. It will feature an iPhone processor and a lower-end LCD display, with a screen size slightly smaller than the 13.6-inch MacBook Air. This is a first for Apple, as it has never used an iPhone processor in a Mac before. However, internal tests have shown that this smartphone chip can outperform the Mac-optimized M1 used in laptops just a few years ago.

Apple has previously experimented with discounted M1 MacBook Air models, but the upcoming J700 will be an entirely new design. The current cheapest Mac, the M4 MacBook Air, starts at $999, a price that can drop to $899 with educational discounts. Chromebooks, on the other hand, start at a few hundred dollars, with premium versions reaching around $600.

In schools, Apple's entry-level iPad setup with the Magic Keyboard Folio is popular, costing around $600 combined. The new Mac, with its better battery life, macOS software flexibility, and integrated keyboard, could offer a compelling alternative for students and consumers alike.

Apple currently holds about 9% of the global PC market, ranking fourth behind Lenovo, HP, and Dell, all of which sell Windows or ChromeOS devices. A much cheaper Mac that maintains Apple's renowned design and seamless integration with other Apple products could spark a new wave of Mac adoption, especially in the US, where the iPhone is dominant.

The Mac segment was Apple's fastest-growing hardware category last quarter, with revenue rising 13% to $8.73 billion. While growth is expected to slow this quarter due to the limited new models, Apple has an exciting roadmap for 2026. Beyond the new low-end laptop, Apple is planning an M5 MacBook Air, M5 Pro and M5 Max-powered MacBook Pros, new Mac mini and Mac Studio models, and even a revamped MacBook Pro with an M6 chip and an iPhone-style OLED touchscreen planned for late 2026 or early 2027. Apple will also debut two new external Mac displays.

So, what do you think? Will Apple's budget Mac be a game-changer or just another player in the low-cost laptop market? Share your thoughts in the comments and let's discuss!
